Jim Woodger, LanzaTech UK
Jim Woodger
Managing Director
LanzaTech UK

LanzaTech is a carbon recycling biotechnology company, originally founded in New Zealand over 15 years ago, with a focus on sustainability and decarbonization. LanzaTech’s carbon transformation technology is like retrofitting a brewery onto an emission source like a steel mill or a landfill site, but instead of using sugars and yeast to make beer, pollution is converted by bacteria to fuels and chemicals. Imagine a day when your plane is powered by recycled GHG emissions, when your shampoo bottle started life as emissions from a steel mill, and when your clothes are derived from refinery off gases. This future is possible today using LanzaTech technology to make a CarbonSmartTM future. Jim Woodger is the Managing Director of LanzaTech UK, part of LanzaTech Inc headquartered in Chicago, USA. In this role, Jim is leading a growing UK team focused on driving forward numerous internal and customer projects based on LanzaTech’s Gas Fermentation and LanzaJet’s Alcohol-To-Jet technologies. This includes LanzaTech’s Project Dragon in Port Talbot, South Wales, which is seeking to convert waste gases into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Jim also engages on government policy to support these decarbonization technologies and is a member of various SAF industry bodies such as the Jet Zero Council, Sustainable Aviation, and the Road Transport Fuels Association. In addition, LanzaTech UK is a member of the South Wales Industrial Cluster (SWIC) and is exploring a number of carbon transformation projects in the UK, EU and across the world. In terms of his wider career, Jim is an environmental chemical engineer, who enjoyed a 13-year career with Honeywell-UOP, in a number of technical roles in Oil & Gas including R&D, Manufacturing, Engineering and Commissioning. In 2007, he was a founding member of UOP’s Renewable Energy & Chemicals business unit that commercialized the UOP HEFA Green Jet & Green Diesel technology. In 2012, Jim joined Solazyme (later acquired by Corbion) in California to undertake business development activities for sustainable products made from algae. Ultimately, Jim was responsible for the global growth of Corbion Algae Ingredients into animal feed, oil & gas, and personal care.
